UN votes to renew Yemen war crimes probe despite Saudi opposition
The United Nations Human Rights Council voted to extend an international probe of alleged war crimes committed in Yemen despite strong opposition from Saudi Arabia and several of its allies.
Nations voted 21 to 8, with 18 abstentions, in favour of a resolution that renewed the UN-backed investigation for a year.
The coalition and the Yemeni government, which together are battling the Houthis, strongly criticised the probe's initial report, arguing that it underplayed rebel violations and Iran's role.
The Arab group in the rights council had backed a rival text that called on Yemen's national human rights commission to take charge of future investigations of the conflict.
That proposal was a non-starter for many states, given a widespread lack of confidence in the Yemeni commission.
The approved resolution led by a group of European states and Canada calls on investigators to deliver another report next September.
Probe members had said they needed more time to fully document the range of violations committed in Yemen's conflict, which has killed more than 10,000 people since March 2015 and triggered what the UN has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
Riyadh's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Abdulaziz Alwasil, said he voted no because the resolution did not address his "legitimate concerns", notably about the "lack of balance" in the probe's first report.
The fact that it went to a vote underscored divisions on the issue within the 47-member rights council, which typically strives for consensus on major texts.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said the vote "sent a clear message that it stands with Yemeni civilians".
"States at the UN Human Rights Council stood firm today, in the face of shameful efforts by the Saudi-led coalition to quash a UN expert inquiry," HRW's Geneva director, John Fisher, said in a statement.
The vote came hours after the Saudi-led coalition strongly launched fresh criticism of the UN human rights mission.
The coalition said any extension should be a matter for the Yemeni government, which already announced on Thursday that it was ending cooperation with the UN investigation into suspected war crimes during more than three years of conflict.
'World's worst humanitarian crisis'
Observers say Saudi Arabia, which leads a coalition that intervened in the conflict in March 2015 on behalf of President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi's government in the fight against Houthi rebels, is actively working to quash the international probe.
Yemen has since descended into what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people killed and millions at risk of starvation.
The coalition has been accused of bombing multiple civilian targets, including buses and hospitals.
Earlier this month, Save the Children warned more than five million children are at risk of famine in Yemen as the ongoing war causes food and fuel prices to soar across the country.
Disruption to supplies coming through the embattled Red Sea port of Hodeida could "cause starvation on an unprecedented scale," the UK-based NGO said in a new report.
Save the Children said an extra one million children now risk falling into famine as prices of food and transportation rise, bringing the total to 5.2 million.
Three quarters of the population - or 22 million people - are in need of humanitarian aid, according to UN figures.

Iran city mayor apologises over 'idiotic' billboard showing Israeli troops
A billboard that was meant to mark the Iran-Iraq war in Shiraz caused outrage after mistakenly featuring Israeli soldiers.
The Iranian mayor for Shiraz apologised for the mistake, the online conservative news agency Tasnim reported on Friday.
"The billboard was installed in Shiraz showing three male soldiers standing on a rocky outcrop" next to a quote from an epic Persian poem, Tasnim wrote.
But the shot was actually a photoshopped picture of Israel Defence Forces, according to Tasnim, with a female soldier from the original picture having been cropped out.
The banner was pulled down from the southwestern city on Wednesday night and the mayor issued an apology the next day.
"This mistake of putting up such a despicable banner during the sacred defence week is unforgivable," Tasnim quoted mayor Heydar Eskandarpour as saying.
Iran commonly refers to the brutal eight-year war with Iraq as "the sacred defence". In recent days, the country has been marking the start of the conflict which began on September 22, 1980 and killed an estimated 680,000 people.
"In addition to apologising to Shiraz's pious and noble people, I ask the authorities to investigate the roots of this suspicious act and promptly report to the people," the mayor added.
Two public relation officials at the municipality were later fired on Thursday night, according to news agency Fars.
Iranian social media was abuzz with heated reactions to the “idiotic” controversy.
"M16 guns, straps, clothes, helmets: all clearly belong to Zionists. The best I can say is that you did something idiotic," wrote a Twitter user identified as @mhrezaa.
Another Iranian user @masoudasadi67 also called for the swift punishment of "those who committed such a heinous act.”
Iran and Israel consider each other regional-arch enemies, with both countries regularly exchanging a war of words on the international stage.
In the latest exchange, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday dismissed Israeli claims that Tehran was harbouring a secret atomic warehouse during the UN General Assembly, belittling Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech as a mere arts and craft show.
Netanyahu held up a map and a photograph of an outwardly "innocent looking compound" which he said was a secret atomic warehouse in Tehran and urged the UN atomic agency to inspect.
"No arts & craft show will ever obfuscate that Israel is only regime in our region with a *secret* and *undeclared* nuclear weapons program," Zarif said in a tweet.

Netanyahu pulls out Iran props again during UN speech
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu pulled out the props again at the UN on Thursday, as he alleged that Iran was hosting a secret atomic warehouse.
Netanyahu followed what has become common practice for the premier, by using visual aids to describe to the UN General Assembly alleged plans by Tehran to develop nuclear weapons. He then vowed that Israel would never allow this to happen.
"[Iran] hasn't abandoned its goal to develop nuclear weapons," he told the UN.
"Israel will never let a regime that calls for our destruction to develop nuclear weapons. Not now, not in 10 years, not ever... Israel will do whatever it must do to defend itself against Iran's aggression," he added.
Netanyahu has focused repeatedly on Iran during his annual UN speeches, using props to bolster his claims. In one address he used a crude diagram of a bomb to illustrate just how "close" Iran was to building a nuke.
This time, he used images when he spoke to the global body.
"What Iran hides, Israel will find," he threatened.
Israel was one of the few world powers to back US President Donald Trump's decision to walk away from a nuclear deal with Iran.
Netanyahu's term in office has seen tensions with Iran hit a new high, with constant attempts to stir up fears among the international community that Tehran is trying to build a nuclear bomb.
During his speech on Thursday, the Israeli premier held up a map and a photograph of what he said looked like an "innocent looking compound".
He then urged the UN atomic agency to take a closer look and reveal its real purpose.
"Today I'm disclosing for the first time that Iran has another secret facility in Tehran, a secret atomic warehouse for storing massive amounts of equipment and material from Iran's secret nuclear weapons programme," he claimed.
He then raised an image he described as "a picture worth a thousand missiles" and titled it "Beirut Precision Guided Missile", claiming that Hizballah had positioned three missile sites near Beirut airport.
The Israeli leader then alleged that Iranian agents were plotting attacks in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. He added that the Iranian regime had been brutally oppressing its own people since the Islamic Revolution, four decades ago.
Netanyahu then pointed out Iran's involvement in wars in Iraq and Syria, was providing arms to Hizballah in Lebanon, backing Hamas in Gaza, and alleged Tehran is behind Yemeni missile attacks on Saudi Arabia.
He then went on to attack the EU's policy of "appeasement" with Iran - stirring up memories of Europe's refusal to confront Nazi Germany before the Second World War.
"Have these European leaders learnt nothing from history? Will they ever wake up? We in Israel don't need a wake-up call because Iran threatens us every day."
He then praised Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement, saying Israel was "deeply grateful" for the move.
He added that it had "unintended consequence" of bringing Israel closer to some of its Arab neighbours, likely referring to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE who have all established close links with the country.
"By empowering Iran, it brought Israel and many Arab states closer together than ever before... in an intimacy and friendship that I've not seen in my lifetime and would have been unimaginable a few years ago."

Detective caught having loud sex with married lawyer in police station interview room.
A detective has been caught in a ‘state of undress’ having sex with a lawyer in a police station interview room.
Detective Inspector Ricky Price and Rachel Pudner were being so loud during their session at Cockett police station that a PCSO became concerned and went to investigate.
Mr Punder was on duty at the time of their romp and Mrs Pudner was at the station to represent a client.
As a result Price, 42, has quit after 22 years of service while Mrs Pudner, a family law lawyer, is still partner at her firm in Swansea.
An source at the police station: ‘It’s been a bit of a scandal – people were sworn to secrecy but everyone knows what happened.
Inspector Price was a career cop who was tipped for further promotion. But he has lost his job all for a quick moment of passion.
‘They were taking a huge risk, they were both practically naked when the PCSO found them at it.’
Mr Price is engaged to Emma Kayes, 33, while Mrs Pudner is married to BT manager Matthew Hulme, 42.
Despite his resignation a misconduct hearing will be heard and he will receive his police pension because he quit before being sacked.
Chief Superintendent Dorian Lloyd, head of professional standards at South Wales Police, said: ‘We are fully aware of the allegations against the officer and an internal investigation is ongoing.
The officer has not been suspended and once the investigation has taken place the matter will be subject to a misconduct hearing.
‘Until this process is complete it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the allegations.’
Mr Price and Mrs Punder have not yet commented.

TEENAGER SUES HIS PARENTS FOR $250,000 FOR NAMING HIM GAYLORD
Gaylord Williams from the small city of Kirksville in Missouri is suing his parents, Dave and Carol Williams, for “deliberately making his life miserable” by giving him “an outdated and prejudicial first name”.
In his allocution presented this morning in front of the Adair County Circuit Court, the teenage boy claims he was an undesired child and that his parents deliberately gave him that first name to make him “a designated scapegoat”.
He claims his parent’s ill-intentioned plan has worked, and that he has to endure constant mockeries and bullying because of his name.
The young man has even been physically assaulted on several occasions and has even been hospitalized twice.
He says he’s tried to get a name change in the past and asked his parents for their permission on several occasions, but they declined every time.
He finally decided to file a lawsuit against his parents in order to obtain a financial compensation for the suffering that they deliberately caused him.
His parents vehemently deny his allegations and claim that they simply named him Gaylord because they liked that name.
Every year, a few dozen young Americans launch civil lawsuits against their biological parents for various reasons.
Many of these cases are cases designed as “wrongful birth lawsuits” and are often instituted by children with predictable birth defects.
According to official records, this is the first time that American parents are being sued because of the name they gave their child.
The actual hearings, in this case, are expected to begin in October.

10 state-owned coys to fund 2018 budget
Joe Anichebe, a director at the Bureau of Public Entreprises (BPE), says the federal government will sell 10 state-owned companies for sale in the fourth quarter of 2018.
According to the director, the sales will raise N289 billion for the funding of the 2018 budget.
Anichebe said preparations are in the final stages for the sales of the companies, which range from aviation to insurance.
Bloomberg reports that the first set of companies to be sold are Nicon Insurance Ltd. and Skyway Aviation Handling Co., which the director said will be sold “this month or early next month” through an initial public offering.
Ita Enang, senior special assistant to the president on national assembly matters, had said the greater part of the 2018 budget will be funded by loans.
“Mr President assented to the budget. The time we are now, we are working on the implementation of the budget. We are working on steps to raise fund for the budget. You know that the greater part of the budget is going to be funded by loans, because it is a deficit budget. And so we are working on modalities to make appropriate request before the legislature,” the adviser said.
“Some of the ministries have already advertised and commenced the procurement process pending which of the projects will finally come out of the budget and how much they will come out even the budget was finally approved.”
The Central Bank of Nigeria recently paid N12.4 billion (pictured) for a 21% stake in the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC).

Disaster: Flood takes over Oguta.
By Chidi Nkwopara OWERRI—
The people of Oguta, who initially thought they have escaped the horrors of flooding, are now counting their losses, following the bursting of the banks of Oguta Lake and its major outflow, Orashi River.
Confirming their predicament yesterday to our source, the traditional ruler of Oguta, Igwe Nani Nzeribe, said the community had lost two persons, a pastor and his wife to the flood. “We have recorded two deaths, a pastor and his wife. The flood submerged their farmland and they went to salvage whatever they could. Their overloaded canoe capsized. For now, we have only recovered the woman’s body, while efforts are on to recover the pastor’s body”, Nzeribe said. According to the royal father, “since the flood started ravaging our farmlands, the farms and settlements have now been written off completely. “People started harvesting their unripe crops soon after the flood alarm was raised by government. The sad thing is that some farmers borrowed huge sums of money from banks and invested in the farms that have now been swallowed up”, Igwe Nzeribe said. Asked to suggest what can be done to save the people from the periodic trauma, the royal father said the construction of an embankment would suffice. “The flood has ravaged the farms and now threatening homes in the town. The only thing we can do in this place is to construct an embankment or disilth in the Orashi-Oguta Lake area to the point that when the flood comes, it has to accommodate it,” Nzeribe said.

Osun 2018: We have discovered 4,387 votes removed by INEC from our ballots – PDP
As varied reactions trailed the declaration of last Saturday’s governorship poll in Osun inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, on Monday night said shocking discovery had indicated no fewer than 4,387 votes were allegedly removed by the electoral body from the total ballots polled by the opposition party.
Addressing a press conference in Ede, the South West zonal secretary of the PDP, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo said thorough investigation has revealed that the PDP was allegedly shortchanged by INEC through the summation of votes in Olorunda and Osogbo local government councils by allotting more votes to the All Progressives Congress (APC) than what the party garnered during the poll.
According to Jenyo, details obtained from Form EC 8C showed that in Olorunda local government, the total votes polled by the APC was 14, 867, while INEC recorded 16,254 votes for the ruling party, indicating that 1,387 additional votes we’re allotted to the APC.
He further alleged that similar scenario played out in Osogbo local government, where the actual votes polled by the APC stood at 21, 479, adding that on contrary INEC recorded 23, 379 votes for the party.
Jenyo, however added that INEC recorded 14, 499 for the PDP instead of 14, 599, just as he said the total votes of the PDP was reduced by 1,000 in Ayedaade local government.

APC Postpones Presidential Primary Twice In 24 Hours.
The all progressive congress (APC)has postponed its presidential primary election to Friday, September 28, making it the second time in 24 hours the party has had to reschedule.
On Sunday, September 23, 2018, the party announced that the primary, earlier scheduled for September 25 would hold on September 27.
However, barely 24 hours after, the party’s national spokesperson, Yekini Nabena, announced a new date.
Nebena, via his Twitter handle, @ynabena, said the party election was again rescheduled because of the Osun State rerun election slated for September 27.
He wrote: “In view of the Osun State Governorship rerun election which has been scheduled for Thursday, September 27th, 2018, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) has now rescheduled the presidential primary election to Friday, September 28th, 2018.
“This is to avoid a clash in dates with the Osun State Governorship rerun election and enable all registered Party members in all thirty-six states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) participate in the exercise.”

APC fires deputy chief whip of the house of reps.
The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Mr Pally Iriase, has been expelled from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for alleged anti-party activities. Newsmen report that the lawmaker who represents Owan Federal Constituency, was expelled by his ward and ratified by the Local Government.
The expulsion letter was signed by Zuberu Shabah and Theophilus Aigboje, Chairman and Secretary respectively, of Owan East Local Government and made available to newsmen in Benin on Monday.
Allegations leveled against Iriase included defection of Ward eight and nine APC executives to the PDP on the orders of Iriase, presenting his Personal Assistant, Hilary Ozogo, to contest under the PDP platform and refusal to attend APC meetings. In the letter addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole through the Edo Chairman of the party, Mr Anselm Ojezua, the Owan East APC said it ratified the decision of APC members of Ward nine to expel Iriase. The letter said all laid down rules and procedures as enshrined in article 21 of the APC’s constitution were followed in reaching the conclusion to expel Iriase. It said the APC in Owan East has since moved on without Iriase and the evidence would show in the forth coming elections. According to the letter, “I humbly invite Mr. Chairman to kindly note the decision of the Owan East chapter of the APC and grant it the very urgent attention it requires. “The APC leadership and members in Owan East have already moved forward without Pally Iriase as we are growing in numbers everyday. This will be evident in the results we post in the forthcoming elections. “Iriase refused to officially inform the APC of his defection because he wants to continue to enjoy the benefit of the office of the Deputy Chief Whip.” Attempts made to get the lawmaker’s reaction on his expulsion were unsuccessful as his two mobile numbers were switched off. NAN recalls that Iriase had at the weekend confirmed that there was intense pressure on him to move to PDP, nut added that he remained focus and committed to the APC. He noted that the rumour about his defection to the opposition may have been informed by his decision not to contest for any political. According to him, “I have made my direction politically very clear, am not contesting the 2019 general election. “Am a member of APC, people who do not want to be in APC anymore have defected. It is a personal thing; you don’t do it by surrogate “Any politician of note that is considered to have electoral value is likely, under the kind of circumstances we find ourselves in Edo state, to be under severe pressure from poachers. “But what you make of that pressure is the real issue, am calm. From rumour flying around, I remain who I am.”

IMO 2019: A must follow for electing a guber flag bearer ~ AIPA..
TEXT OF A PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE AMALGAMATION OF IMO PROFESSIONAL BODIES AND ASSOCIATIONS ON THURSDAY, 20th SEPTEMBER 2018 AT THE NBA BAR CENTER, STATE HIGH COURT PREMISES, OWERRI.
Gentlemen of the Press,
We welcome you all to this all important briefing today.
We have called this press conference to intimate the general public about the take off of the much awaited mass movement in Imo State, and to douse the tension created in certain quarters when the Amalgamation of Imo Professional Bodies and Associations was announced in Owerri after a meeting attended by Media Executives, Legal Practitioners, Independent Newspaper Publishers Association (INPA), representatives of the Academics, Nigeria Psychological Association (NPA), Market Union Leaders, the Clergy, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Association of Imo State Students (NAISS), National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Association of Imo State Indigenous Town Unions, as well as the apex sociocultural organizations of the three senatorial zones in the State, namely: Olu Owerri,Orlu Zurumee and Olu Okigwe, among others.
We hereby announce that we represent the Imo masses and hold the mandate of our organizations, members and teeming followers to notify Nigerians of the collective resolve of Imolites to go all out for the enthronement of good governance in our dear State through the election of a credible Governor in 2019, irrespective of political party affiliation.
In carrying out the onerous task of scrutinizing the records and antecedents of our would-be Governor, we have had to set up a committee on TEMPLATE and STRATEGY, headed by a former Imo NUJ Chairman, Chief Fidel Onyeneke which sat several times to produce a template that will be the mirror with which we shall view our incoming leaders. ️We further announce that any political party, big or small which shall field any candidate that will meet a higher percentage of the template requirements shall get the massive support of the members of our above listed bodies and associations.
The necessity for this is rooted in the urgency to get Imo out of the doldrums and launch it among the league of prosperous states in Nigeria. We believe that the sorry state of our education, economy, healthcare and infrastructure is a fit justification for us as a people to reflect aloud on the character of leadership required for a renascent Imo State. We believe also that good governance can be realized only when people imbued with the right attributes are elected to govern.
Having gone through the report of the Committee and brainstormed on the document after wide consultations, we hereby release the following template which specifies the quality of ️the Governor Imo people are looking forward to having come 2019, this will also serve as a guide to ️political parties and critical stakeholders in their choice of candidates during the forthcoming political party primaries.
Points will be allocated to the template and there will be a systematic collection of data from the research to be conducted on these candidates, these will be further analyzed, to give a percentage rating.

Osun: Omisore accepts defeat
The candidate for Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the just concluded 2018 governorship election in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore has accepted defeat and vowed not to relent in championing campaign for democracy and good governance.
The election result which was announced today by the state Chief Returning Officer, Professor Adeola Joseph Fuwape, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, FUTA, Akure and declared inconclusive has Senator Ademola Adeleke of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP pulling the highest votes but not enough to declare him the winner.
Omisore, in a thank you message to his supporters and people of Osun, in general, said, “I am confident that while we might appear to have lost an election, we have won the greater victory; the clarion call by all our people for good governance and accountability”.
Read his statement here: ”On the 22nd of May 2018, I took the bold decision to seek for election to the Office of Governor of Osun State under the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP). The past four months have been very exciting. I am delighted that our message of good governance and dignity has reached every corner of the state.
“Over the past four months, I have worked with committed people who have given time and resources to our shared agenda for restoration. I am confident that while we might appear to have lost an election, we have won the greater victory; the clarion call by all our people for good governance and accountability. We have positively impacted on electoral campaigns and elections in Osun state promoting inclusion, people-centredness and shied completely away from vote buying, voter intimidation and thuggery. The SDP campaign was factual, informed and inclusive.
“Our manifesto presented to the people an Agenda for Restoration of Good Governance and Human Dignity. Its five pillars spoke to our needs across all sectors, promoted access that would leave no one behind and reversal of reckless financial management of the current APC government in Osun state towards shared prosperity and economic growth. The reaction was swift, albeit as a ploy to win votes. Our campaign prompted payment of salaries, a commitment to push back on common uniforms and questionable mega schools. We have called attention to patronage-driven public sector management and indeed engaged citizens in such a way that the demand for public accountability will continue to drive governance going forward, irrespective of which party leads the state.
“I must thank everyone who supported the Restoration Agenda for their commitment and work. This is the core of the democracy we seek. We have won the electoral battle in a way hitherto unheard of in the state, and I daresay in contemporary democratic elections in Nigeria. You have all done well and I thank you.
”We shall continue in our demand for good governance, accountability and human dignity. My commitment to this remains total without any prejudice to the next steps we collectively workout. Our people’s votes have again been manipulated through vote buying and exploitation of the hunger in our land. Only good governance and committed leadership can drive out this hunger. The quest for this continues. I enjoin you to sustained action noting as Mary Matthews states in the 1948 movie ‘State of the Union’ “Politicians have stayed professionals only because the voters have remained amateurs.” We shall continue to invest on democratic education and political awareness of our people, so vote buying is totally eliminated in the most peaceful and democratic ways. The SDP shall not leave the Osun state to corrupt wheeler dealers but shall continue to commit to social justice and equity until we can be assured that our electoral processes are sanitized and give us the state of our dreams. I thank you all”.

INEC declares Osun gubernatorial election inconclusive.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Saturday’s Osun State governorship election “inconclusive”.
Announcing the results on Sunday afternoon, Joseph Afuwape, INEC’s Returning Officer, said Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled254,699, while his closest challenger, Isiaka Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had 254,345 votes.
Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled 128,049 votes to place a distant third.
However, Afuwape said that since the difference between the two leading parties was just 353 votes but the number of cancelled votes was 3,5498, no winner had emerged.
“Unfortunately, as the Returning Officer, it is not possible to declare any party as winner,” he said.
He implored party agents to wait for a few minutes to get the date for a rerun between the two leading candidates.

Anthony Joshua Knocks Povetkin Out To Retain World Heavyweight Titles
Anthony Joshua retained his world heavyweight titles by inflicting the first stoppage defeat of Alexander Povetkin’s professional career with a ruthless seventh-round finish at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
A previously close contest turned in Joshua’s favour decisively when he sent the Russian crashing to the canvas with a straight right hand and left hook.
Povetkin gamely beat the count but Joshua piled in before referee Steve Gray stopped the contest at one minute and 59 seconds of the seventh round.
Victory saw Joshua extend his unbeaten professional record to 22 wins from 22 fights, with 21 knockouts in front of a raucous home crowd.
“Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight,” Joshua told Sky Sports.
“I realised he was strong to the head but weak to the body.
“I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again.”
Joshua was putting his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation belts on the line against 39-year-old Russian challenger Povetkin.
This fight was the latest in a line of professional heavyweight title bouts, featuring the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, between two former Olympic champions, with Joshua having won gold in front of his home crowd at the 2012 London Games — eight years after Povetkin stood atop the podium in Athens.
Joshua, 28, had a significant height and reach advantage of several inches over Povetkin.
Friday’s weigh-in also confirmed a significant size difference, with Joshua tipping the scales at 17 stone 8 pounds (111.5 kilogrammes) compared to Povetkin’s 15st 12lbs.
This fight saw Joshua returning to the scene of arguably his greatest triumph, an 11th-round stoppage of former champion Wladimir Klitschko last year.
Klitschko was the only man to have previously inflicted a blemish on Povetkin’s now 36-fight record, with a points win back in 2013.
Joshua, born in nearby Watford but based in London, had been taken the distance for the first time as a professional in his last title defence — a unanimous points victory over New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in Cardiff in March.
The undercard of that fight saw Povetkin serve notice of his formidable punching power with a sickening knockout of Britain’s David Price.
Povetkin, who in 2016 was given an indefinite ban from boxing after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium that was later cut to a year, had insisted in the build-up he was a far stronger fighter than the one beaten by Klitschko.
Partisan home crowd
He was booed all the way into the ring by a partisan crowd while the smiling champion was roared in to chants of “Oh, Anthony Joshua” at a rainswept Wembley.
But the first round ended with Povetkin, stooping low, rocking Joshua with a right uppercut that drew blood from the champion’s nose.
Joshua, who said Thursday that “my well is deep, my heart can definitely go through hell and back” was certainly being tested in the opening exchanges, although he did start to respond with some single-punch jabs.
And come the fourth round, Povetkin had a significant cut above the left eye.
Nevertheless, come the end of the sixth he was still in the contest only for Joshua to seal victory barely two minutes later.
But whether this win takes Joshua any closer to a fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight title-holder Deontay Wilder, who next fights Britain’s former world champion Tyson Fury on December 1, remains to be seen.
“My number one would be Wilder,” said Joshua when asked about his next opponent, with promoter Eddie Hearn adding: “If it’s not Deontay Wilder then it will be (Britain’s) Dillian Whyte here on April 13.”
