Buhari Govt Orders CJN Onnoghen To Vacate Office, To Arraign Him On Criminal Charges

The President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government has ordered the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen to immediately vacate office.

Consequently, the government will on Monday January 14, 2019 arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

The charge against Justice Onnoghensighted by PRNigeria has already being filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal.

The Federal Government among others is accusing Nigeria’s Head of the judiciary of refusal to declare his assets in breach of the provision of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.

He is also being accused of maintaining Domiciliary foreign currencies account which comprised Dollars Account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account which are alleged to be contrary to relevant laws, especially for public office holders.

Justice Onnoghen, whose appointment suffered delay by President Muhammadu Buhari over undisclosed issues, may be the first CJN in Nigeria to be arraigned for criminal charges by the Federal Government.

Apart from putting the Chief Justice in the dock on Monday, PRNigeria learnt that a motion on notice is to be filed against him praying the tribunal to order him to vacate office and recuse himself from office so as to prevent alleged interference in his arraignment and trial.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria was said to have been engaged by Federal Government to prosecute justice Onnoghen.

Already, eminent lawyers have volunteered to put their services at the disposal of Justice Onnoghen.

Thieves invade National Assembly Complex, burgle Remi Tinubu, two others’ offices

The security lapses in and around the National Assembly Complex seems to have worsened, with three members’ offices looted by thieves within the week.

On Wednesday, office of the lawmaker representing Lagos West Senatorial District and wife of the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was looted, with computers and other devices stolen.

Also on Wednesday, the office of a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Muhammed Gausu Boyi, representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State, was burgled, with valuable items carted away.

Mrs. Tinubu, in a statement issued on Thursday night by legislative aide, Nifemi Aje, disclosed that an HP laptop computer, Smile internet modem, some copies of the Nigerian Constitution, machine box attached to the Closed Circuit Television camera, among others, were stolen by the yet-to-be identified thieves.

Tinubu disclosed that report of the theft has been lodged at the National Assembly’s Police Post.

Boyi, in a petition to the Sergeant at Arms, Brig.-Gen Mohammed Sani (retd.), reported that his office had been emptied by the thieves.

According to the letter dated 10th January, 2019, listing items missing from his office, Boyi said two Samsung Plasma Television sets, two HP photocopying machines, one water dispenser, one Samsung refrigerator and a printer were stolen.

The lawmaker, in the letter he signed, said his office assistance, Mr. Abba Yusuf, discovered the burglary in the early hours of Thursday when he resumed for work.

He noted in the letter that a similar report had been made at the office of the Divisional Police Officer of the National Assembly Division of the Nigeria Police.

Another member of the House, Mr. Muazu Lawal, from Zamfara State, also reported to both the Sergeant-at-Arms and the DPO’s office that his office was burgled in December 2018.

The DPO, Mr. Umar Sambo, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed that the incidents had been reported to the division, saying that investigations of the crimes were already ongoing.

The offices were locked when our correspondent visited them.

When contacted, Sergeant at Arms Sani declined to comment on the thefts.

INEC Settles for Nationwide Pilot Electronics Transmission Of Results ~Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it would only do a nationwide pilot electronic transmission (e-collation) of results in  the forthcoming  general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof.  Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this in his opening remarks at the Commission’s regular quarterly meeting with the media on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that for the Commission to do full electronic transmission of results there must be a backing law for that.

“The Commission is also aware of the interest expressed by the media to learn more about the commission’s electronic results transmission process, including its backend processes.

“This meeting will include a presentation on the pilot we carried out in some of the off-season elections conducted by the Commission".

Yakubu urged media organisations to sensitise registered voters yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so, in order for them to be able to participate in the forthcoming general elections.

He re-emphasised that the commission would not create additional polling units for 2019 elections, other than units created for the 2015 general elections.

“No new polling unit has been created and none will be created before the 2019 general elections,” he said.

The INEC chairman appealed to the media to partner with INEC in tackling the worrisome issue of vote buying which the commission had been working to address.

“We appeal to the media to continue to partner with the Commission by making information available to us while we work with the security agencies to deal with the violators of our electoral laws.

“These include those who may be trying to compromise our staff responsible for making the PVCs available for collection by legitimate voters.

“We understand that some actors have been going round hunting for our staff responsible for the distribution of PVCs. We are aware of this and we are ahead of them, “ he said.

Answering questions on plans to introduce the rolling and flattening of ballot papers by voters as part of measures to address vote buying, Yakubu said that plans were in place to ensure that it did not lead to increased voided votes.

Arise News published an interview with the president on its Youtube page on Monday.

While presenting the intro to the interview, tagged: '90 Minutes with President Buhari', Charles Aniagolu, the presenter, stated that Buhari declined to feature live on television, and chose a recorded session instead.

His terms were agreed to and the Board of Editors from ThisDay engaged the president for 90 minutes.

Speaking on the interview conducted with the president, Aniagolu said: “Straightaway, Mr Buhari declined to be interviewed live on camera by Arise News, preferring instead to hold a recorded session only with ThisDay newspaper. And so, the Board of Editors from ThisDay spent over an hour questioning the president about the substance of his major policy signature issues such as lapses in security, the fight against corruption, the economy, poverty alleviation and the infrastructure deficit.

Eniola Bello, Managing Director of ThisDay newspaper; Kayode Komolafe, the Deputy Managing Director of ThisDay newspaper, and Segun Adeniyi, chairman of ThisDay Board of Editors, who was also former spokesman of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, conducted the interview and spoke on their experience.

Speaking on why the president declined to be interviewed live, Eniola Bello, the Managing Director of ThisDay newspaper who was in charge of setting up the interview and liaising with the presidency, said: “At the initial stage, we wanted a live interview with the Arise crew. But midway, they said ‘No’. We had set up the equipment, but around 1pm on Sunday, we were told that because of our lead story in ThisDay, reporting the pending interview, that there had been some pressure to, if not, reduce the way we were going to go to the villa.

"So, Arise crew was not allowed to come in. They said they will get NTA to record it for us, then we could take the tape from NTA. Essentially, that was what happened."

According to a publication by ThisDay earlier on Sunday, the newspaper had initially announced that Buhari would feature as its first guest in the series of presidential debates.

It read: “As part of its many contributions to the enhancement of the country’s electoral culture and improvement of the process of electing leaders, THISDAY Newspapers and Arise News Television are beginning a presidential debate series Sunday at 10pm, with President Muhammadu Buhari and candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the first guest.

“Although, debuting Sunday with President Buhari as the first guest, other candidates like former Vice President and candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, are to follow in no particular order but based on their availability and schedule for the interview.

“The first of its kind, the first leg of the debate series, which is billed to hold at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is to be anchored by panellists from both THISDAY and Arise, led by the Chairman of the two media outfits, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena.

Minimum Wage: Nationwide Strike Can Start Anytime Without Notice

Ahead of a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s refusal to send a draft bill on N30,000 National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly to legislate into law,  organised labour and its civil society allies are, today, holding a nationwide mobilisation and mass protest to force government into action.

Though a definite day for the commencement of the nationwide strike is yet to be announced, labour had on December 20, 2018, while issuing a December 31, 2018, deadline to the government over the issue, declared:   “Organised Labour will not guarantee industrial peace and harmony if after December 31, 2018, the draft bill is not transmitted to the National Assembly.

"This serves as a statutory notice for Organised Labour to recall our suspended nationwide industrial action".

Reinforcing the threat that a nationwide strike could start at anytime without further notice, President of United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, Joe Ajaero, said though no date had been fixed for commencement of the strike, it could start the next day after the national protest.

He said: ‘’It can start today, it can start at anytime. We agreed during our meeting (of leaders of organised labour) on December 20, 2018, in Lagos that the December 31 deadline given to government to send a draft bill to the National Assembly to legislate on the N30,000 minimum wage recommendation by the Tripartite Committee, serves as a final notice to the government  for us to resume the suspended November 6, 2018 nationwide strike.

"What that means is that a nationwide strike can start today, tomorrow or next without further notice to the government".

Speaking on today’s protest, General Secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said, yesterday, that NLC’s 36 state councils, affiliate unions and friendly groups, such as civil society organisations, CSOs, have mobilised for the nationwide mass protest.

Ozo-Esan in a statement, entitled: “Tomorrow (Tuesday) is a day of protest and mass mobilisation,” read: “It has come to our attention that a section of the news media has largely misrepresented our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly by President Mohammadu Buhari.

We immediately announced then that on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilisation and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike. It is on record that each time we had cause to embark on a national strike, we say so publicly without any equivocation.

" When a date is decided for the commencement of a strike subsequently, we will inform the public appropriately".

Similarly, Joint Action Front, JAF, while declaring members support for today’s protest, insisted that the N30,000  minimum wage, as recommended and submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, was no longer negotiable.

In a joint statement by its National Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Dipo Fashina and Abiodun Aremu, JAF said: “ The Joint Action Front, JAF, declares its support for the nationwide mass mobilisation and mass protests being organised by organised labour tomorrow (today) in furtherance of the struggle for the actualisation of the of N30,000 as the new Minimum Wage, which was agreed and endorsed by all parties in the Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.

"JAF, hereby, urges its affiliates, allies and other pro-Labour civil society organisations to mobilise their members across the country to join forces with organised labour in their respective locations on January 8 to sensitise Nigerians on the necessity of a general strike to enforce the N30, 000 Minimum Wage against the anti-poor stand of governors, employers and Buhari’s government".

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim Announces Resignation

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim announced Monday he would step down next month, more than three years before his current term was due to expire.

The decision ends Kim’s six-year tenure and may give US President Donald decisive influence over the future leadership of the global development lender.

“It has been a great honor to serve as president of this remarkable institution, full of passionate individuals dedicated to the mission of ending extreme poverty in our lifetime,” Kim said in a statement.

Kim, who became president in 2012, is to join an as-yet unnamed firm focusing on investments in developing countries, the bank said in a statement, and will return to the board of Partners-in-Health, which he co-founded.

Under Kim’s leadership, the bank set the goal of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 and ramped up financing.

Last year, it also won approval for a sharp $13 billion capital increase after acceding to requests from the Trump administration to curb loans to high-income countries like China.

Kim’s tenure was also marked by high levels of disaffection among World Bank staff, who chafed at a widespread internal restructuring that Kim began.

World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva will serve as interim president upon Kim’s February 1 departure, the bank said in a statement.

Holy cow! One-eyed calf is worshipped as a god in India

A newborn calf with just one eye is being worshipped as a god in eastern India.

The little cow, whose appearance is due to a birth defect, was born in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal.

In video footage shared online, the one-eyed calf, which also does not have a muzzle, can be seen sticking out its tongue and gasping for breath.

The owner said: 'Ever since it was born, people have crowded my place to see the bizarre calf.

'They are now considering it to be a miracle of God and have started worshipping it'.

The calf has cyclopia, a rare congenital disorder that occurs in both humans and animals.

It develops in the womb when the left and right hemispheres of the brain do not separate as they are meant to early on in pregnancy.

This leads to the formation of a single central cavity with one eye, or sometimes partially fused or separate eyeballs and often the complete absence of eyelashes and eyelids are absent.

The nose is also deformed, as in this calf, with an underdeveloped upper jaw.

A creature with cyclopia may be able to distinguish light and dark but will not have proper vision because the retina won't form properly.

Creatures with the condition are normally stillborn or die shortly after due to breathing and brain problems.

BREAKING: Coup In Gabon As Soldiers Hijack Power After 50-Year Rule Of Bongo Family

Military officers have staged a coup in Gabon, seizing the state radio station as they declared their dissatisfaction with President Ali Bongo, whose family has ruled the country for 50 years.

President Ali Bongo who is currently recovering from a stroke in Morocco took over the country’s rulership from his father, Omar Bongo, who ruled Gabon for 42 years before his death in 2009.

The Gabonese soldiers staging the coup announced the establishment of a “restoration council” via the national radio station after it was taken over by soldiers.

There were reports of shots being fired in the capital, Libreville, on Monday, Aljazeera reported.

Reading out a statement, the military officers condemned President Ali Bongo who addressed his compatriots last week from Morocco for the first time since reportedly suffering a stroke in October.

A New Year’s address by Bongo “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office”, said Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, leader of the self-declared Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon.

“Once again, one time too many, the wielders of power deceptively continue to instrumentalise the person of Ali Bongo Ondimba, a patient devoid of many of his physical and mental faculties,” said Obiang.

Gunfire was heard around state television offices in the centre of the capital at about 6:30am (05:30 GMT), and military vehicles blocked access to the site, an AFP news agency correspondent reported.

Violence erupts in Gabon as Ali Bongo elected again
Bongo, 59, is said to have suffered a stroke on October 24 while visiting Saudi Arabia and has since been treated in Morocco. His family has ruled the oil-rich Central African nation for nearly half a century.

The president posted a video message recorded in Rabat and distributed via social and traditional media last Monday in which he admitted he had been “through a difficult period”.

But he added: “Today, as you can see, I am preparing to meet you again soon.”

Presidential spokesperson Ike Ngouoni later told AFP, “This speech is proof that President Ali Bongo is fully recovered. His health problems are now behind him.”

In a video circulating on social media, Ondo Obiang is seen in a radio studio wearing military fatigues and a green beret as he reads the statement. Two other soldiers with assault rifles stand behind him.

Ondo Obiang said the coup was being carried out against “those who, in a cowardly way, assassinated our young compatriots on the night of August 31, 2016” – a reference to deadly violence that erupted after Bongo was declared the winner of a disputed election.

A source close to the government said told Reuters news agency the plotters appeared to be a small group of soldiers. A spokesman for the presidency said he would make a statement shortly.

The US military has deployed soldiers and equipment to Gabon amid fears of violent protests in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after its contested presidential election.

US President Donald Trump told US Congress on Friday the first of about 80 troops arrived in Gabon last Wednesday to protect US citizens and diplomatic facilities should violence break out in DRC’s capital, Kinshasa.

Bongo won re-election in 2016 by fewer than 6,000 votes, sparking deadly clashes between protesters and police during which the parliament was torched.

The European Union said it found anomalies during the election in Bongo’s stronghold province of Haut-Ogooue, where he won 95 percent on a 99.9 percent turnout.

Why Military Invaded DailyTrust Offices – Defence Spokesman

The Defence Spokesman, John Agim, has explained why the military invaded and shut down the operations of DailyTrust offices in Abuja and Maiduguri in Borno State.

According to him, the invasion was not to stop the press from doing their job but because the medium made a publication that revealed the plans of the military in fighting insurgency.

“I think it is completely unacceptable for any media house to have information about the military plan on the fight against insurgency and publish such plans,” he said in a phone interview with Channels Television on Sunday evening.

“Boko Haram terrorists will be informed ahead of time and that also shows that they (DailyTrust) are sympathetic to the insurgents and the intention was just to invite them and let them understand the dangers their action puts on the military.

“So, the intention is not to stop the press from doing their job. They need to understand that without peace and security in the land, they cannot perform their job. So for everybody who has information, there’s a need to check with the security agencies before they publish such because releasing such information ahead of time can jeopardize the operation”.

The soldiers have, however, vacated the Abuja office of news organisation.

According to Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, the development followed an order given by the President.

Asari Dokubo Attacks Ahmed Gume On His Comment Against Igbos

"Igbos were allowed to establish businesses and live in other parts of Nigeria peacefully. However, they deny other tribes from simple owning shops in ALL EASTERN MARKETS!
Yes! I have gone to many eastern markets for ethnic survey. And no single shop is or was allocated to non Igbo. Please if there is one market with non Igbo, please mention" -  Ahmed Gume

RESPONSE
How many shops do Hausa or Yoruba people own in Cameroon, Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Malawi, Sierra-Leone, Gabon UK, United States, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong-kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Germany, China, Taiwan, South Korea, India and countless other countries all over the world.

Those are not Igbo areas after all. Perhaps, they deny you shops like the Igbo did in all these countries. Igbos own shops and do business in those countries.
This is exactly how lazy people complain when they fail in business. If you can't compete on your own land, how are you going to do that in Igboland or neutral ground?

Every Igbo city has a place exclusively mapped out for Hausas free of charge for temporary use (that is the truth they will not tell you). Of course you know, Hausa man has his own pattern of business and shops mostly in form of kiosk where he sold his patty trades and provisions on free given portion of the street.

Another good business they do in the east is money exchange and cattle business which they control in every Igbo city on a free given land; 100% fact. Go to Owerri, Umuahia, Enugu, Awka. Nnewi. Aba etc.
Igbos don't wait for free land or free portion to be allocated to them, they buy them from indigenes who always have it free by inheritance or by allocation but doesn’t know what to do with them. Only quota system worthless person will wait for allocation before he starts a business.
How many shops do Hausas have in Lagos and other south west states? or do the Yoruba deny them shops too? Can you compare the number of shops and markets owned by Hausas in Yoruba land to the number owned by the Igbos?

Igbos rent shops from the landlords. Igbos Buy lands from the host to build shops. Igbos buy land from their host to build markets. Igbos don't wait for shop or land allocations to start up their businesses.
How many markets has the Hausa built in Lagos? None. How many markets has the Yoruba build in the north? None or do the Hausa and the Yoruba deny selling land to one another too, like the Igbos denied them?

But Igbo have used their money to buy lands from south west and north and build many markets that helps to develop their regions.
To be honest, not every Igbo traders in south west or north can compete with the traders in the east. The traders in the east are real geniuses in trading. They are wizards in buying and selling more than those Igbo traders in the west and north.
You have to first compete with the Igbo traders in your own territory before you think of competing with them in their own territory.

Business is based on competition, the question is, can you compete? There are shops in Onitsha main market but can you afford to rent it? Even when you do what do you intend to sell to regain your profit?.
Is it igbo man that sacrifice to be single till the age of 40 to balance his business achievements before marriage you want to compete with? Igbo man who wear warn out cloths with bathroom slippers to save money for his bussiness? Or the one that maintain just one wife you choose to compete with?....The one that married, how many children do they agreed to born, all are the sacrifices in order to save more for his business.

Nobody compete with the fulanis in their cow business or you think they don’t make money in that? Please leave the igbos alone, business is their God given talent.
We are Biafrans!!!.

Niger Delta Militants Resumes Bombing Of Oil Facilities, Says More To Come

A Niger Delta militant group known as Koluama Seven Brothers has carried out a “warning” strike on an oil facility owned by Conoil in Bayelsa state.

The attack, which was confirmed by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was carried out on Friday, according to a statement from the group.

The militants also threatened a production shut down at the facility if their grievances are not addressed.

The statement added they would carry out further strikes if their demands, including job creation, were not met by the company.

Conoil Producing Nigeria operates six highly prospective blocks in the Niger Delta and produces over 80,000 barrels of oil per day.

Oil exports account for around 80 percent of foreign exchange earnings of the Nigerian government.
