Exercise may make you GAIN weight: People eat nearly a quarter more after a work out because 'they feel like they deserve it'.

Many of us complain of slaving away in the gym without seeing any benefit to our waistline.
But scientists may finally have the answer to this phenomenon.

Although it may seem counter-intuitive, research suggests exercising could cause people to gain weight.

A group of volunteers increased their portion sizes by nearly a quarter following a sweaty work out.

Researchers believe people overindulge after a gym session because they believe they 'deserve it'.
And this may explain why people can struggle to lose weight even after exercising regularly, they added. 

The research was carried out by Loughborough University, which boasts Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe and Clive Woodward among its sporting alumni.

When it comes to weight loss aside from what we eat, a critical factor is how much we eat,' study author and senior lecturer in nutrition Dr Lewis James said.

'The results of the present study suggest that knowledge of a future exercise session results in an increase in planned energy intake at a meal after exercise, at least in habitual exercisers.'

The researchers had 40 volunteers, half of which were women, take part in an aerobic class at least three times a week.

The NHS recommends all adults aged between 19 and 64 should take part in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week.

Examples of such activity includes brisk walking, cycling, rollerblading, hiking or volleyball.

Alongside the 150 minutes, each adult should perform strength exercises on at least two days each week, targeting the major muscles.

However, the NHS also says that 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity is fine for those who cannot commit to 150 minutes of moderate activity.

Examples of aerobic activity include running, tennis, football, rugby or rope skipping.

A mix of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity is also recommended.

The participants were also weighed, and asked how much they eat after a work out and on a 'rest day'.

Writing in the journal Appetite, the researchers said: 'Individuals chose a larger portion size - a 24 per cent increase in energy content of food served [after classes].

'This increase in planned energy intake might attenuate the negative energy balance induced by exercise, and consequently might reduce any weight loss with chronic exercise training.'

The participants also upped their lunch-time portions by 150 calories after working out, the research found.

And the scientists warn repeating this at dinner would more than outweigh any benefit of exercising.

Chocolate consumption was also up by 20 per cent, with the female volunteers helping themselves to slightly more than the men.

Speaking of the effect this has on people's figures, the researchers wrote: 'Typically, there is an initial weight loss.

'However, after this, the rate of weight loss attenuates, or weight becomes stable over time.

'This finding suggests aerobic exercise might impact meal planning, at least in regular exercisers, which might account for some of the reasons behind stabilisation of weight loss.'

But when exercise is combined with a healthy diet, it is an effective way to lose weight, they stress.

'Statistics suggest the prevalence of overweight and obesity continue to rise, with 61 per cent of UK adults currently classified as overweight or obese,' Dr James said.

'Weight gain occurs due to energy intake greater than energy expenditure, leading to accumulation of fat in adipose tissue.

'Increasing physical activity, particularly aerobic activity, is one method of increasing energy expenditure that has been suggested to assist with weight management'.

Notre Dame Cathedral In Paris On Fire

Fire engulfs the historic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris with huge plume of smoke seen billowing from the roof.

Pictures posted on social media showed enormous plumes of smoke billowing into the city's skyline as firefighters rushed to the historic site.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the historic monument before spreading to engulf a large section of the roof.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the blaze was first reported at 5.50pm (GMT) and the building was evacuated soon after.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.

The cathedral is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe, and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Notre Dame - which means 'Our Lady' - was build in 1160 and completed by 1260, and has been modified on a number of occasions throughout the century.

Nigeria police arrests officer who destroyed DELSU student's phone for being costly

Nigeria Police arrest officer who destroyed a DELSU student's N250,000 phone because its too expensive.

Yesterday, the video of a police officer destroying the phone of a Delta State University student which he reportedly bought for N250 ,000, went viral.
The officer could be heard saying that in his 13 years in service, he has only been able to buy a N15, 000 worth of phone.

In anger, he smashed the phone on the ground. The incident, according to the twitter user who posted the video, happened in Okpe.

According to an update by the Nigeria Police Force on Twitter,  the officer has been arrested and an orderly trial has commenced.

Anambra Assembly Passes Bill Reducing Cost Of Burial, Duration Of Mourning

The Anambra State House Of Assembly has passed a bill that seeks the reduction in the expenses of organising funeral and burial rites in the state, and to prosecute offenders.

Sponsored by Hon. Charles Ezeani, the member representing Anaocha 11 constituency, the bill was passed after due consideration by House during Wednessday's plenary session.

The just passed bill provides that in the event of death, no person shall deposit any corpse in the mortuary or any place beyond two months from the day of the death.

The bill also noted that from the commencement of the law, no person shall subject any relation of the deceased person to a mourning period of more than one week from the date of burial ceremony.

Apart from the number of days recommended for burial ceremonies, the bill equally frowns on other flamboyant means of celebration that may cause destruction of property, gunshots, praise-singing, blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies; it also states that defaulters shall be punished in accordance with the law.

It further states that burial ceremonies in the state shall be for one day.

The bill further stipulates that during burial and funeral ceremonial activities, the family of the deceased shall provide entertainment for their kindred, relatives and other sympathizers at their own discretion.

Speaking further on the signifance of the  bill, Charles Ezeani, the sponsor of the bill who represents Anaocha 2 Constituency, maintained that the bill also made provision for a monitoring and implementation committee that would enforce the law as well as their responsibilities.

The lawmaker described  the bill as "an important and great achievement by the 6th Anambra Assembly", as it had put to rest the high cost of burial and funeral activities in the state.

Rita Maduagwu, Speaker of the Assembly, commended the lawmakers on the quick passage of the bill, saying it would "moderate burial expenses in the state".

Man Caught Withdrawing Money From ATM Without Debit Card

 A young man, Azeez Morufu, was on Tuesday allegedly caught withdrawing money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) belonging to one of the new generation banks located at Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe, Ibadan, without using a debit card.

A passer-by was amazed seeing the ATM dispensing huge amount of money to Azeez without a debit card at the ATM point located beside the Ibadan national station of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

Azeez ran out of luck when the bewildered passerby raised the alarm and drew the attention of bank security personnel and others to the scene.

FRCN Ibadan national station reported that the young man confessed that it was not the first time he would be carrying out the act.

“Morufu said he has a code he always input on the ATM to dispense without a card,” FRCN further reported.

Our correspondent gathered that Azeez had been handed over to the police.

But of course, we have also seen the negative and destructive outcomes of these trends in other countries. “ It is my view, that no region of the world has felt the full impact of these dramatic shifts and shocks like the Middle East and Africa – North and Sub-Sahara. “On one hand, our region is blessed with a very young, vibrant, enterprising and dynamic population. We also have valuable natural resources that are the envy of many nations. “These assets and endowments contributed to our region experiencing some of the highest economic growth rates in the world. “ On the other hand however, we have also been hosts to some of the deadliest conflicts in recent history. The deaths, damage and destruction caused by terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, ISIS and Boko Haram over the last ten years will take decades to repair. By the special grace of God, today, most of these terrorist organizations have been significantly degraded. The world came together to achieve this. Now, we are faced with the task of rebuilding.

 “It is at this point that we must ask ourselves how we, as a region, got to this point. The answer, at least in the case of Nigeria, is the lack of social and economic inclusion. As Nigeria celebrated being the largest economy in Africa and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Nigerians were migrating in droves through harsh desert conditions and across treacherous seas to seek what they believe would be a better life in Europe. “Ladies and gentlemen, I strongly believe that the lack of social and economic inclusion was the root cause of many challenges we are experiencing. Today, our population is one hundred and ninety million people. By 2050, it is estimated that we hit three hundred and ninety million making us the third most populous country in the world.

This means we must start working now to ensure this population is productively engaged. “In the last four years, we focused on security while implementing inclusive policies. On the security front, we made significant gains in fighting Boko Haram. We have recaptured all territories held by Boko Haram in 2014. We have liberated thousands of Nigerians held against their will. “Today, I am pleased to say no territory in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is held or controlled by Boko Haram.  We are extremely grateful to the many countries that have stood with Nigeria to confront this global scourge and in particular, the Kingdom of Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty, the King. “Furthermore, our economic diversification and social inclusion policies are also yielding positive results. Our country has now returned to the path of growth. We are making gains in the ease of doing business indices. A key driver for growth is the agricultural sector where we aggressively pushed agricultural policies that empowered millions of our rural citizens. “In the spirit of “Building New Platforms of Cooperation”, we partnered with the Kingdom of Morocco to domesticate fertilizer production in Nigeria and revive over two million tons of abandoned fertilizer blending plant capacity. “The outcome is we created tens of thousands of jobs in agriculture, logistics, manufacturing and retail sectors. We are able to achieve moderate growth. But it was inclusive.

Nigeria is now at a new dawn and embarking on a new development trajectory. We are determined to industrialise Nigeria leveraging our comparative advantage. Nigeria seeks Brazil’s support in combat against insurgency, terrorism “We recognize the private sector as the engine of growth and a veritable partner in our economic agenda. The Middle East is a natural partner. Africa and the Middle East must therefore focus on policies that will deliver shared economic prosperity for all our citizens. On trade and investments for example, we can do more. Africa represents only five percent of Jordan’s trade with the world. But we have the resources, the people and the markets to do more. “Opportunities exist in key job creating sectors such as Agriculture, Health, Tourism, ICT, Infrastructure as well as Textile and garmenting to mention a few. Our new, inclusive and diversified Nigeria is definitely open for business. Our population, resources, policies and programs make it the most attractive investment destination in Africa. “As friends and allies, we must therefore cooperate and leverage on our relative strengths.

We must remain open to “Building New Platforms of Cooperation. As we deliberate over the next two days, I would ask all leaders present to reflect on our collective experiences. We must identify how we can work together. “Today, we are living in a new world. In this new world without borders, my personal view is stability and sustainability can only be achieved through inclusive economic growth, and enhanced cooperation amongst nations.
