Canadian Province Announces Two-year Ban On Admission Of Nigerians, Other International Students

British Columbia is banning new post-secondary institutions from applying to enrol Nigerians and other international students for the next two years, as the province roots out "exploitive practices" plaguing the system.

Post-Secondary Education Minister Selina Robinson said Monday that the freeze is necessary to correct faults in an international education system that "has not been working as well as it should."

According to CBC News, Robinson said the province began looking into the system last March and found instances of "poor-quality education, a lack of instructors" and even the "scaring away" of students from lodging formal complaints by certain private institutions.

One student, Robinson said, told her that the woman's family in India saved money to send her to British Columbia for a "quality education." Instead, she was placed in online classes upon arrival, the minister said.

"She arrived here being told that there would be in-class instruction, only to discover on her first day of class as she showed up that the entire course would be taught online," Robinson said. "And she couldn't understand why she spent all that money for an online program.

"We do need to stop the bad actors from misleading these students, and that's what we're here to fix."

Robinson also announced the province was setting minimum language requirements at private institutions so international students would be "better prepared" before coming to British Columbia.

More details on the language requirement will be released in March, Robinson said, as work is still being done on that front.

Of the 175,000 international post-secondary students from more than 150 countries in B.C., about 54 per cent are enrolled in private institutions.

There are 280 of those private schools in the province, and 80 per cent of them are in the Lower Mainland.

Robinson said the province will step up inspections of the schools to ensure standards are met, adding that many students are being taken advantage of.

"They worry that if they complain, it will risk their student visa, and it will sacrifice all the effort their families have put into making sure they can get a quality education," she said. "So, they're less likely to complain.

"As a result of hearing that, we're going to be … developing a system where we'll be on site and doing a more proactive evaluation of programs."

Robinson said the two-year pause gives the province some time to assess the impact of recent changes, such as the federal government's capping of study permits it approves over the next two years.

Imo: Banning Peaceful Protests, an Affront on The Nigerian Constitution - Olu Owerri

...says, IMHA members, poor students of history. The apex sociocultural organization in Imo East senatorial district, Olu Owerri has berated some members of the Imo House of Assembly for betraying the people of the state at a time of great tragedy against good governance in the state which was hard won but truncated by the supreme court on January 14. Reacting to the motion of the House for banning of peaceful protests and arrest of the INEC Returning officer and Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Prof. Francis Ezeonu for declaring the result of 2019 governorship election in Imo State, the President Chief Martin Opara and Secretary of the organization, Barr. Sylvester Nwogu disowned the house members and reminded them that posterity will reward them for betraying their people for a pot of portage. The group insisted that it is unfortunate that lawmakers who should be custodians of the constitution, will condescend so low to the point of stifling freedom of speech and movement which are guaranteed in the Nigerian Constitution. According to them, " It is not the business of the Imo State House of Assembly; a legislature, to pass a vote of confidence or vote of no confidence on the the Supreme Court; the judiciary. This action exposes the most pathetic level of incompetence, lack of knowledge of the most basic idea of legislative responsibilities and an embarrassment to the executive, whom they have succeeded in portraying as holding them hostage. It is an embarrassment for the Chief Press Secretary of the Supreme Court declared Governor to assume the position of the Imo House of Assembly spokesman, by issues releases to announce that the Assembly called for the arrest of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC, the same man who announced their victories in the same election". The group insisted that the judgement of the Supreme Court remains a setback to the solid foundation of good governance laid in Imo State by the massive election of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and called on the Supreme Court to have a second look at the errors in calculation and fraudulent misrepresentation that led the Apex Court to such anti people judgement.

OLU OWERRI DEMANDS ACCOUNT OF 3 MONTHS LG ALLOCATION FROM UZODINMA

PRESS RELEASE NON PAYMENT OF SALARIES AND SUSPENSION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROJECTS: OLU OWERRI DEMANDS ACCOUNT OF 3 MONTHS LG ALLOCATION FROM UZODINMA ...Says Imo Governor lacks the integrity to engage elected Governor Wike in a verbal war. A social cultural organization in Imo State, Olu Owerri has asked Gov. Hope Uzodinma to account for the January, February and March 2020 Local Government allocations, to the people of Imo State or be willing to face protest against the nonpayment of Local Government Staff salaries as well as those of state civil servants since his assumption of office. The call was contained in a release signed by the President General, Chief Martin Opara and made available to newsmen by the organization in Owerri after a situation assessment meeting. The group observed that the 27 LGAs have now become a cash cow for the governor who has turned the monthly allocations to his pocket money, whereas all ongoing projects in the LGAs have been suspended, without any new project to justify the massive withdrawal of Local Government funds in the last three months, using complacent and easily manipulated civil servants who who have their job to protect. According to the release, the rural dwellers are not happy that road grading / maintainance, sporting complexes projects as well as LGA multiple office complexes initiated by the Local Government Areas under former Gov. Ihedioha, were suspended by the incumbent governor without taking up new projects in the LGAs. The group lamented that the era of looting public funds has returned, wondering why the governor has used every opportunity and pronouncements he has made so far to remind the masses of imminent calamity starring them in the face as if that is the essence of the I'll fated and conceived supreme court verdict that foisted him on the people. Finally,Olu Owerri therefore advises the habitually unguarded and prodigious governor to retract his steps in the management of scarce public funds and to refrain from continuing his needless media war with the governor of Rivers state..aka Mr projects who is very busy developing infrastructures and turning the fortunes of the state around and concentrate on his job despite the conspiracy that brought him to Douglas house unlike the popular mandate given to Governor Wike by the people of Rivers state for the second term.

Trump Takes His 'Revenge': Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman Is FIRED And Escorted Out Of The White House For Testifying Against The President During The Impeachment Inquiry

President Donald Trump fired Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman from the White House on Friday after the war hero testified against him in the House impeachment inquiry. Vindman was escorted out of the building this afternoon and told his services were no longer needed. 'Today, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman was escorted out of the White House where he has dutifully served his country and his President,' his attorney David Pressman said in a statement. 'He does so having spoken publicly once, and only pursuant to a subpoena from the United States Congress.' He indicated Vindman was fired for his testimony to the House. 'There is no question in the mind of any American why this man's job is over, why this country now has one less soldier serving it at the White House,' Pressman said. Vindman's twin brother Yevgeny Vindman, a National Security Counsel attorney, walked off the White House grounds alongside him although it's not clear if he was also fired, CNN noted. Earlier in the day, the president did not deny the reports of Vindman's imminent dismissal. I'm not happy with him. Am I supposed to be happy with him? I'm not,' he said to reporters at the White House on Friday who asked him about Vindman. Vindman, a National Security Council aide, will be informed as soon as today that he is being reassigned to the Defense Department, The Washington Post reported. Vindman, who received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Iraq, had told officials at the NSC that he intended to take an early exit from that assignment and leave by the end of the month, sources told the newspaper, but Trump wants to make a symbol out of the Army officer now that the president has been acquitted by the Senate.
